Treat/Retreat Certified Instructor

TRCI is an advanced credential earned through Suzanne Clothier’s Treat/Retreat certification program. The method is designed specifically for dogs experiencing “stranger danger” - those who bark at, avoid, lunge toward, or feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar people.

Treat/Retreat is a structured, force-free approach that helps dogs build confidence through carefully managed interactions that respect their boundaries and emotional state. The goal is not forced friendliness, but helping dogs learn they can safely and calmly navigate social situations.

The certification reflects advanced competency in:

• Reading subtle body language and stress signals

• Creating emotionally safe learning environments

• Helping dogs build confidence around unfamiliar people

• Structuring social interactions that reduce pressure and build trust

• Teaching handlers and helpers how to support positive experiences

• Progressing dogs thoughtfully through increasingly complex social scenarios

The program includes specialized coursework, case study work, practical application, and assessment of hands-on skill using the Treat/Retreat methodology.
