Dog Training

Kenai, CGC
Australian Shepherd/Beagle mix (??)
Born ~5/15/2000, neutered male

Kenai is my renaissance dog. He has taken classes in Basic obedience, Competition obedience, Rally obedience, Tricks, Canine Acting, Agility, Flyball, Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog and Herding.

Kenai was found by a woman when he was 12 weeks old, wandering along a street in a town in North Carolina. He was malnourished, full of worms, and mangy. She nursed him back to health, and we adopted him. He has taught me about the advantages of positive reinforcement based training, how to train a great recall, how to address resource guarding, and the importance of dog-dog socialization.

Osa, CGC NAC NJC AAD
Australian Shepherd
Born 7/7/2000, spayed female

Osa is my heart dog. She has been challenging but everything I have put into her has come back to me tenfold. She has taken classes in Basic obedience, Canine Good Citizen, Herding, Agility, Agility, and More Agility.

Osa was first purchased by a sedentary older couple in North Carolina from a "breeder" selling puppies at the flea market. At the age of 8 months, they decided that she was too much dog and that they were going to take her to the county shelter. My vet asked me if I knew anyone looking for an Aussie...

Osa has taught me about shy/fearful dogs, energetic dogs, the importance of being a consistent and decisive leader in a multi dog household, how to work with leash reactivity toward other dogs, how to address stranger anxiety and fear-based aggression, and the importance of early and thorough socialization toward all types of people, especially men in hats with facial hair and glasses!

Taiko, CGC
Border Collie
Born 12/24/2004, neutered male

Taiko was bred by a farmer in North Carolina on some bad advice from a herding trainer. The farmer was ill prepared for the results, and ended up with 8 puppies that were poorly socialized, full of parasites, unvaccinated, and without homes. A friend of mine was friends with the farmer and ended up with a puppy in trying to help the farmer out. The puppy, however, was trying to wrestle with her toy poodles with too much enthusiasm. She told me, "I don't know what to do with this dog." I did! He was a foster dog for approximately 20 minutes before I decided he was here to stay!

Taiko is a smooth coated tricolor border collie from herding lines. He has taken classes in basic obedience, Canine Good Citizen and Agility. He has taught me how to work with dogs that are not food motivated, how to build toy drive, and how to manage strong herding instinct. His nickname is The Noodle!

Toshi
Jack Russell Terrier
Born ~12/20/2000, neutered male

Toshi is our newest addition. After dog-sitting and fostering terrier and chihuahua mixes (Trevor and Vinnie are pictured in several places on this website), I developed a great affection for the pint-sized pups. Toshi was adopted from the Humane Society for Seattle/King County on the 16th of December 2006. He arrived there as a transfer from another rescue organization, and little is known of his history. He has fit in wonderfully with our pack and plays tug of war with Taiko daily.

Toshi is honing my timing during training (those little guys are fast!), teaching me how to deliver reinforcement to an 11 inch tall canine, and keeping me on my toes in true terrier fashion! He has already taken his first airplane ride with much self possession and patience. Toshi is currently enrolled in Basic Manners, and it will be exciting to see what our future holds together!
